HIV Prevention Services: PEP & PrEP

Protecting your health with fast, confidential, and effective prevention options.

Understanding PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)

What Is PEP?

PEP is an emergency HIV prevention medication taken after a possible exposure. It helps reduce the chance of acquiring HIV if started promptly.

When Should I Seek PEP?

Get PEP immediately if you think you were exposed to HIV.

You can obtain PEP from:

  • Emergency Departments
  • Urgent Care Clinics
  • PrEP/PEP Navigators
  • Sexual Health Clinics

PEP must be started within 72 hours. Every hour counts.

How PEP Works

  • A provider evaluates your exposure.
  • Treatment typically lasts 28 days.
  • Follow-up HIV testing is required after completing the regimen.

Types of PEP: Occupational & Non-Occupational

Occupational PEP (oPEP)

For exposures that happen in the workplace, such as needle sticks or contact with infectious fluids in healthcare settings.

Non-Occupational PEP (nPEP)

For exposures that happen outside the workplace, including:

  • Sexual exposure
  • Sexual assault
  • Sharing needles or injection equipment

Both forms follow similar treatment pathways but may differ in reporting and follow-up protocols.

Understanding PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)

What Is PrEP?

PrEP is a powerful strategy for people who want ongoing protection from HIV. When taken as prescribed, PrEP drastically reduces the risk of HIV transmission.

Available Options for PrEP

There are several PrEP options available today. Speak with your healthcare provider about what option is right for you.

  • Daily PrEP Pills
  • Every-two-month injectable PrEP
  • Every-six-month injectable PrEP

Why Use PrEP?

PrEP is a part of a holistic prevention plan and works well alongside:

  • Condom use
  • Regular STI screening
  • Contraceptive options
  • Safer injection practices

Is PrEP Right for You?

PrEP may be helpful if you:

  • Have a sex partner that is HIV positive
  • Have multiple sex partners, or a partner with multiple sex partners
  • Have anal sex without a condom
  • Do not always use a condom during sex with people who inject drugs, men who have sex with men or a sex partner with unknown HIV status
  • Have recently had a STD/STI in last 6 months

You use injection drugs, AND…

  • Shared needles or equipment used to inject drugs in last 6 months
  • Have been in drug treatment in the last 6 months
  • Identify with any of the additional items listed above
